Story

For decades, Baylor sports teams were occasionally called the Bulldogs or the Baptists in newspapers but they had no official nickname until 1914 when a mascot-naming contest was proposed to the student body. "Bear" was overwhelmingly voted as the winner of the contest with more than half of the votes and has been the school's official nickname ever since.
